Reading + Writing Update – Biannual Bibliothon 2019 Day 1 & 2

Happy Sunday!

I was going to do daily updates for the current readathon I’m participated in, the Biannual Bibliothon, but I decided to do a reading update every 2 days instead. It works out that this is the second day of the readathon (well, the very, very end of the second day) and also the day I post my weekly reading and writing update so yay. I’m tackling two birds with one stone. Anyways, let’s get into it!

This week was a decent reading week. Not my best, but I did finish reading 2 books and started on a third! On Tuesday, I finished the fourth and final book in the FABULOUS Raven Cycle quartet by Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven King. It was a good book but honestly, I wasn’t that satisfied with the ending. It seemed…too easy for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the characters and want them to live happily ever after, but the way things got resolved was strange, to say the least. I still really enjoyed it though and flew through it! The next book I started on was Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Every month or so I need a little break from fantasy and magic, and desperately need to slip into some cute contemporary stories. Soooo, I chose Anna and the French Kiss and it was exactly what I needed! I actually only finished it a few hours ago…but hey, it got done and I had fun so that’s all that matters. Last but not least, I started my second read of the Biannual Bibliothon (whoops, forgot to mention that Anna and the French Kiss was my first read of the readathon!), Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I mentioned in my goals for 2019 that I wanted to read more classics so here I am, reading classics! I’m really excited to read this and join the bandwagon, and I’m hoping I truly like the story but I have no idea at this point in it. I might be around 30ish pages into it so I still got a ways to go. If you want to see what I plan on reading for the rest of next for the readathon, check out my TBR HERE!

I think I’m done my writing break. While I took most of my winter break off from writing back in late December/early January, I think that was enough time for me to replenish my creativity. It felt so strange not to write, and honestly, I really didn’t like how it made me feel. I haven’t written a crazy amount this week or anything, but I did write well over 2,000 words and I think that’s a healthy amount when getting back into the swing of things. I’m working on a non-magical piece…actually the short story version of a later script I will be writing/adapting for my writing class. We are doing screenwriting but in order for me to fully create a fleshed out story, I need to write the in-depth short story for it first. My first draft of it was about 1,500 words and I’m looking forward to tackling the second draft tomorrow!

I got a long list of books I want to get through in July and I think I will be able to finish them all because I believe the BookTube-a-thon is happening this coming month, and I always get a lot of reading done then. Anyways, here are the books I want to read in the month of July!

City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare – These are the first three books in The Mortal Instruments series, which follows a girl named Clary Fray who has to set off on a journey in this world of angels and demons to find her mother who was kidnapped. Along the way, she realizes she has more of a place in this strange and deceiving world that she thought. This series is a lot of fun and is action packed, so I am excited to be giving the books a re read because it is much deserved!

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen – I have been slowly making my way through Sarah Dessen books, which is a long journey because there are a lot of them. The Moon and More is one I haven’t read though, so I am excited to finally pick it up and give it a read. This book follows a girl named Emaline who is spending her last summer before college in the little beachside town she lives in called Colby. One day while working in her parents shop, she meets an artistic boy from New York who is not her type whatsoever, but she can’t help but develop feelings for him over the course of the summer. Its summer time so what a perfect time to dive into this summer contemporary!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – I am reading this book on the side at the moment, but I am hoping I will completely finish it by July. Pride and Prejudice, if you didn’t know, is a comedy/romance book that follows a British family in an era where marriage and money is everything. I have seen movie adaptions of this book and really enjoyed them, so I decided to give the book a read because I feel like you have to read at least one Jane Austen book in your lifetime.

Reading/Writing Update!

I have finally finished Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare, and it was absolutely fantastic! It was everything I could have hoped for in this book, but that ending shook me and broke me…but it was still amazing. Since I have finished Lord of Shadows, I got the urge to re read The Mortal Instruments series which is on my summer TBR and its summer so yeah, I am re reading the amazing series! I am also reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen which I am also enjoying and am excited to get more into it.

I have been very busy with writing, and for the past nine or so days, I have gotten into the habit of writing 1000+ words a day! I am working on a project I have been wanting to start for a really long time but had only done the planning for it, and now I am finally writing it! Even though I have been writing for a few years, I had always thought of myself as an outliner, but I realize now I am definitely a panster. I like to just write up a detailed three paragraph outline and then list twelve major plot points I want to hit. I also come up with detailed characters and go into depth on my world, but plot wise, I kind of just go for it and that’s what works for me! Question: Are you a outliner or a panster?

Summer Reading Recommendations!

Summer is within arms reach so make sure you have your sunglasses, sunscreen and a pile of books ready to be read. If you need some help figuring out which books to read though, here are a few recommendations that are perfect beach reads!

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson – This book is the perfect summer romance story to indulge in during the summer. It follows a girl named Emily whose best friend, Sloane, has mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind only a summer bucket list for Emily. As Emily sets off to complete this list, in hopes of it leading her to Sloane, she runs into some unexpected new friends that help her live an unforgettable summer. I love Morgan Matson books, but this one is definitely by favourite and I recommend you read it if you love contemporaries like myself!

Paper Towns by John Green – I am not a huge John Green fan, but I didn’t mind Paper Towns and I thought it was a great beach read. It has a summer adventure and fun characters to follow so it is definitely worth a shot. Paper Towns follows this boy named Quentin, who is determined to find the girl he has been pining after for years, after she mysteriously disappears. Along with a few friends, they work together to follow the clues Margo left behind, to figure out where in the world she is. There is also a movie adaptation of this book which is also entertaining so I recommend you watch it after you read the book if you already haven’t!

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare – Since its summer, start a new series! I recommend The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare because it is fantastic, and even if you have already read it, re read it! There six books in this series, and the first one, City of Bones, follows a girl named Clary whose mother disappears and we follow her as she sets off on a journey to find her. Along the way, she realizes the world she lives in is really a world of demons and angels, and discovers that she has more to do with this world than she thought. This series is action packed and has a great cast of characters so I really recommend you jump right into this series and enjoy the fun ride!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan – This is also a great series to read during the summer because is witty and extremely fast paced. You also learn a lot about mythology in this series, considering it is based around Greek mythology. The first book of five is called The Lightning Thief, and it follows a young boy named Percy Jackson who discovers he is the son of a Greek god and is being accused of stealing Zeus’s master lightning bolt. Now he has to go on a quest to find the real lightning thief along with two friends, Annabeth and Grover, and find the bolt before the end of the summer solstice. I love, love, love this series and think it is something anyone can enjoy!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – I am currently reading this along with Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare, and I am really enjoying it so far! It takes a few pages to adjust to the language, but once you have you don’t want to stop. Pride and Prejudice follows the Mr and Mrs Bennett and their five daughters, and how they find love during this completely different era. There are witty characters and romances and I cannot wait to continue diving into the book!

Classic Book TBR

I have never actually read a classic book like the Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice (yet) or Little Women or anything like that but I want to. I feel like it is a whole other world of literature compared to what is written today. So here is a list of the couple that I would like to finish before I finish high school! If you have any recommendations please comment 🙂

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – This is actually next on my TBR pile and I am really excited to finally read it! I have a good feeling that I am going to enjoy it but it may just take a few pages for me to get into it. After I finish the book, I am planning on watching one of the film adaptations because the only Jane Austen related movies I’ve seen are Austenland and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies but I did like those movies a lot so hopefully I will also like the actually movie…

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald – Only recently did I decide I wanted to read this and since they didn’t have it at my library I just got the movie for now. I honestly have no idea what it is about besides that it is set in the 1920’s and has Leonardo DiCaprio staring in it so that is good enough for me. Once I find the book I will read it and hopefully it is as amazing as everyone says it is!

Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne – I have this book sitting on my shelf but I just haven’t picked it up and its annoying me so much because I really want to read it! When I was younger, my grandpa told me stories and he told me the plot line for this book and I just fell in love. I had to read it so he ordered it for me but after 4 years I still haven’t read it…I will though. I am determined to read it this year.

Those are the top 3 classic books that I want to read before I finish high school! There are definitely more but those are the ones I am determined to read. Hope you enjoyed 🙂
