Beginner’s Guide to: Dystopian!

I enjoy doing this post so here is a beginner’s guide to dystopian books!

divergent_hqDivergent by Veronica Roth – This is a no brainer because the Divergent trilogy is one of the most iconic dystopian books ever! I really loved the first book, Divergent, and while the other two weren’t my favourite, I still really recommend this series because it is unique and a great read! Divergent is about sixteen year old, Tris Prior who has to take an aptitude test that will determine where she belongs, but when the results are complicated she finds herself having to hide who she truly is.

The Hunger GamesThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Again, another famous dystopian series that you have to read if you haven’t already. The Hunger Games takes place in a world where every year, twenty-four kids are picked to fight to the death in payment for a war that happened many years ago. When Katniss Everdeen volunteers to fight in her sister’s place, she becomes the spark of a growing revolution.

Shatter-MeShatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – Shatter Me is a fun and entertaining trilogy that is so poetic and heart wrenching. It follows a girl named Juliette who has been imprisoned for many years because she has strange powers, but when she is broken out she realizes she isn’t the only oddball in her world. There is lots of action and romance in this book trilogy and I totally recommend it!

selection-cvrThe Selection by Kiera Cass – This series is basically a mash up of The Bachelor and The Hunger Games and is honestly so awesome. The main character can get on your nerves but overall it is a thrilling and adorable read! The Selection follows America Singer who enters a competition for the Prince’s heart but things get complicated when she is in love with somebody else.

Legend_Marie_Lu_Book_coverLegend by Marie Lu – The first two books in this series are so flipping fantastic and you NEED to read this trilogy! Legend takes place in a futuristic California and follows our two main characters, June and Day. June is part of the army and Day is a convicted criminal, but when June sets out on a mission to hunt him down she realizes things aren’t the way she was taught they were.

Those are my dystopian recommendations and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post: Intro to Journal Writing!

Reading Update!

Hey guys! Sorry I have been kind of off and on lately, I’ve been busy with Camp NaNoWriMo, other writing projects and of course, reading. Since I’ve been busy I decided to update you guys with a reading update!

So I finally completed Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead a few days ago, and it is the final book in the Vampire Academy series. I was really sad to finish it but it was such a great series and I am definitely glad I picked it up. Since I finished that series, I moved back to the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu which I started last month. At the moment I am about 270 pages into the second book, Prodigy and I am loving it so much! Very excited to finish it because its amazing, and so I can get onto my next book: Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson! I have never read a Morgan Matson book but I have heard her books are amazing so I am ecstatic to finally be able to read one. After that I will be reading books I have picked out for the Booktube-A-Thon because I will be participating in that this year! I am actually working on creating my YouTube channel at the moment but I most likely will have my first video up tomorrow which will be my Booktube-A-Thon TBR so stay tuned for that! If you are curious, my channel is the same as my blog, mylifewithbooks and I really hope some of you check out my video when it goes up and hopefully you all will like it. I have been wanting to create a channel for a while now and I am finally just going for it so hopefully I will be decent at it!

Anyway that is all for this reading update and I will be back soon with another blog post!

Book Recommendations!!!

This book recommendations blog post will be a bit different then others because I will be recommending the books in a different way. This is inspired by Sasha Alsberg’s (abookutopia on YouTube) recommendation video “If you like this book then you’ll like this book.” Confusing? You’ll understand if you read the recommendations below!

If you like Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi then you will like Legend by Marie Lu. These two trilogies are both dystopian and have a similar feel to them, plus they are just amazing books and you will devour each and every one of them!

If you like Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell then you will like Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Again, these are the same genre (contemporary) but they are quite different yet there is a resemblance to the other. I love both these books so much and I know you all will too!

If you like Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas than you will like Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. These are both amazing fantasy books that will captivate you from the beginning! It takes me a bit to get into fantasy like this but once I did I could not put it down!

If you like Twilight by Stephanie Meyer than you will LOVE Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. I recently just finished the Vampire Academy series and it is amazing! And obviously if you like Twilight you will like Vampire Academy because they both have the same feel to them!

If you like The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy you will like Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout. These are both sci fi books that I personally adore and everyone else who reads them seems to love them as well so…Read them!!!

Those are a few recommendations and I hope you liked them!

June Wrap Up

June is almost over so I decided it was about time I share with you guys all the books I managed to read in June! Like May, June was a really great reading month and I managed to complete a total of 7 books! Here they are:

Blood Promise by Richelle Mead was the first book I finished in June and it is the 4th book in the Vampire Academy series. I really liked this book and a lot of very important things happened that totally blew my mind…4.5/5 stars!

The Crown by Kiera Cass is the second book I read this month and it is also the last book in the Selection series which I am really sad to see end. I enjoyed this book and I felt like it did a decent job of tying up all the loose ends but sadly I wasn’t blown away by it. 3/5 stars!

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare is a book I completed for my English class and I actually ended up enjoying a lot more than I thought…because I liked it as much as I did I am hoping to read another book by Shakespeare this summer! 3/5 stars

Me Before You by JoJo Moyes…can we just take a moment to recognize how sad and amazing this book was. I really, really loved this book and I couldn’t put it down once I picked it up. It told such a realistic story which I personally really appreciated but really every aspect of it was amazing. 5/5 stars!

Legend by Marie Lu is a 5th book I read this month and I cannot believe it took me this long to pick it up! Oh well, I’ve read it now. I loved this book and I thought the whole plot line was fun, exciting and interesting and I was on the edge of my seat with every page! Just picked up the 2nd book so I cannot wait to continue! 4.5/5 stars!

Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead is the 5th book in the Vampire Academy series and oh my god this book was fantastic! Every part was just so fun and exciting that I kept turning the page wanting to find out what happens next. I am really sad I am almost done the series but I am so pumped to read the final book! 5/5 stars

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is the final book on my wrap up. I am currently reading this and am about half way done but I already love it so much! All the characters are really unique and complex and I love each and everyone of them honestly. 4.5/5 stars…so far.

That was my wrap up and I hope you liked it 🙂

Legend by Marie Lu Book Review (Spoiler Free)

I recentlyLegend_Marie_Lu_Book_cover finished Legend by Marie Lu and I really enjoyed it. Don’t worry if you haven’t read this book because this is a spoiler free review but I definitely recommend you go and read this trilogy because it is so good!

If you didn’t know, Legend is about a boy named Day, who is a convicted criminal with more of a backstory then people think, and a girl named June who is highly looked up in their government. They both have two entirely different lives but when June sets out to take down Day she realizes he may not be the criminal everyone thought he was and shocking truths unravel about their government that she couldn’t even think of.

I thought this was a strong first book for this trilogy and I was satisfied with the outcome and how the story came along. Each character had their unique voice and I didn’t feel like they were blending together which is very important when you are writing a book in more than one point of view. This book totally spun a different way then what I thought and it was a really fun ride that I hope continues in the next two books! Overall I loved this book and think everyone should read it! 4.5/5 stars.

Books I Want to Read

There are a lot of books that I want to read that I don’t own so here are some of them! Comment down below some books you want to read!

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a bit of an older book but the movie is fantastic and I have seen it so many times that I want to pick up the book! I have heard it is a really good so that is a plus and I am hoping to read this within the next month or two.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes is a romance book that has a lot of hype around it at the moment because the movie is coming out next month. Every person I know who has read this cried and for some reason that intrigues me. That and the fact it looks like a great book.

Legend by Marie Lu is a series that I really, really want to start because everyone has read it but me! I am pretty sure this is a dystopian trilogy and I just really want to read this and love it as much as I know I will.

The Crown by Kiera Cass is the final book in the Selection series which I adore because it is so cute, well most of the time…and easy to read. I am really sad to see the series end despite the fact I thought it ended after the One. I don’t enjoy reading in Eadyln’s (spelling?) as much as America but I still enjoy the series.

Those are some of the books, definitely not all, that I want to read soon and I hope you liked it!
