Biannual Bibliothon Day 6 – Reading By the Fire 101

Happy day 6 of the Biannual Bibliothon!

Not going to lie…I completely forgot to write a reading update for day 3&4 but that’s okay because I didn’t get much done (hahaha go me). Anyways, today’s blog host is Jacqueline from EvilQueenBooksBlog and she wants us to tell her what books we think would be perfect fireside reads. This challenge sounds so cozy and it makes me want to curl up by the fire and read…even though I don’t have a fire to do that with. But anyway, I decided that along with picking 5 books to read, I would share some tips on how to have the perfect reading time next to a fire.

STEP ONE: Choose Your Books

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling

I had to throw a Harry Potter book in here because are they not the most perfect side reads? The fourth book is my favourite as of right now in the series because it’s long and a little bit of a different plot structure than her other books. When I close my eyes, I can definitely imagine myself by the warm and crackling fire, swaddled in a blanket and cracking open this amazing book.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Not only would this be a great fireside read because it always makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, but it is also one of those books I can finish in one sitting. This book is relatable, funny, adorable, awkward, and a whole lot of fun to read!

The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth

The atmosphere in this novel is cozy enough on its own that I wouldn’t even need a fire to read by. The story would do a well off job heating me up on a cold, cold day. This contemporary-fantasy book takes place in dreary ol’ London, the best place, I think personally, to cuddle up next to a fire. Well, actually right now in Canada a fire sounds great too but you get what I mean!

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

I have yet to read this book, which is the third installment in the Eleanor’s Home for Wayward Children series (will be reading it this readathon though!). I loved the first two books and cannot wait to dive into the next one. These books are so incredibly short (this one being under 150 pages),  and that along with their addictive, fast-paced storylines, makes them great fireside reads.

 

STEP TWO: Make Yummy Drinks/Snacks

This is a very important step. Are you going to make some delicious, rich hot chocolate? Steep some green tea or brew some coffee to keep you awake whilst reading? Maybe you’re a little hungry and need something to snack on. Well, now is the time to figure that all out! Personally, I would love nothing more than to snuggle up with a good book and some hot chocolate right now.

STEP THREE: Atmosphere

This is also crucial to your fireside reading experience. The atmosphere must be the ultimate cozy atmosphere, but how do you accomplish that? Well, let me tell you: blankets (specifically fuzzy ones, but any old blanket will do), mood lighting (if the fire isn’t enough light to read, light some candles or if your lights can adjust to different settings, perfect), and of course, seating (are you going to sit on the ground next to the fire, or on a chair? This is important to figure out people!).

STEP FOUR: READ

One important thing to remember while reading by fire is too NOT PUT YOUR BOOK IN THE FIRE. Whether it is intentional (for who knows what reason. Maybe the book is really bad) or accidental, books do not belong in fires. If you are a particularly clumsy person, adjust yourself so there is no way your book can accidentally fall out of your hands because let’s be honest, that would ruin step 3, and it’s all about the atmosphere.

Reading/Writing Update!

Merry Christmas Eve! This is the second last reading/writing update before the new year which is crazy. I cannot believe we are only a week away from 2018, I am hands down ready for 2017 to be over though, so I cannot wait. Anyways, this week hasn’t been an amazing reading week. I prefer to read right before bed but this last week I have been falling asleep as soon as I touch my bed…meaning I haven’t gotten a lot of reading done. Yesterday was my first day off school so I spent it lounging around and being lazy, but hopefully I have gotten that out of system and am going to make these next two weeks productive reading and writing wise…fingers crossed I can fight the laziness and procrastination. However, I did finish Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert this week, and I absolutely adored it! I will talk about my feelings om it more in my December 2017 Wrap Up which will be coming in a week or so, but for now, all you need to know is that it is definitely worth the read! I have also been re reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling, and am about 170 pages in. I am hoping I can finish it pretty soon because there are so many other books I want to get to but I also don’t want to rush it!

Lately I have been planning a creative non-fiction piece I am working on for a local writing contest. The deadline isn’t until March so I got plenty of time, but lately I have been leaving things to the last minute and while I do think so of my best work is produced that way, I don’t want to get in that habit. So I have slowly been mapping out my ideas and what the goal of my piece is, and I am really enjoying it! I am really glad I have decided to write more than just fiction, because while fiction will always be my favourite to write, I do really enjoy writing essays and creative non-fiction pieces!

January 2018 TBR!

This is my first TBR of the new year and I am so excited! 2017 was kind of a reading bust because I only read 40-or-so books, but I am determined to read a lot more this coming year. Because of that…my TBR is kind of ambitious but I know I can do it!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets + Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling 

Currently I am re reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and am obviously loving it, as it is getting me in the holiday spirit. Obviously I cannot just start one and not continue on with the whole series, so I plan on giving the entire series a re read! I doubt I need to explain the synopsis of the Harry Potter series, especially since these are the second and third books in the series but yeah, I am really excited to be giving these my annual yearly re read!

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Eliza and Her Monsters was a book I read back in July for the BookTubeAThon, and I read it in just a few hours because it was so amazing. It talks about the hardships of being a creative person, as well as being someone who doesn’t fit in well at school and suffers from mental illness. These are really important representations in books because I know for myself, it is very relatable. Eliza and Her Monsters follows Eliza, who is the anonymous creator of the online phenomenon webcomic, Monstrous Sea. It follows Eliza as she meets Wallace, who happens to be Monstrous Sea’s biggest fanfic writer, and she struggles with keeping her true identity a secret as they grow closer together, brought together by their love for this webcomic that she created.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

This is a really short book that I heard is amazing, so I have no doubt that once I actually force myself to pick it up, I won’t want to put it down. We Were Liars follows a “perfect” family that spends every summer on private island, however this summer is not the same. Cadence, a fifteen year old girl, has something happen to her during her fifteenth summer, and with the help of others she tries to remember the accident. I really had to pull this synopsis from online, but even then it is still really mysterious…and intriguing so I am excited to (hopefully) pick it up next month!

This Savage Song by V.E Schwab

I really look up to Victoria as a writer. She has fantastic tips and ideas about creativity, and overall she seems like a very genuine person! Not too long ago I purchased This Savage Song, because it got, and still is getting, wonderful reviews so I really would like to get to it in the New Year. This Savage Song follows August and Kate, two who are on opposite sides of their divided city which are at war. All August wants is to be human, and he could if he steals a soul with music. When Kate gets kicked out of yet another boarding school, a chance arises and he jumps at it, only to be faced with a change of direction and suddenly him and Kate are on the run.

The Hamilton Book Tag!

If you somehow do not know what Hamilton is…it is basically an epic musical based on the life and events of Alexander Hamilton. I am not even American, yet I absolutely love the songs from this musical, and the whole history behind them. Since I love Hamilton so much, as well as books, I thought this would the perfect tag to do! (P.S. I am not sure who created this tag, but if you do know definitely let me know!)

The Room Where It Happens – Pick a Book World That You Would Put Yourself In

Ok, so for this literally everyone has said Harry Potter, because who wouldn’t want to live in a world where magic exists? Of course that would be my answer, but I decided to be a little more original and not officially choose that. So, my answer is the Percy Jackson world from Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. I chose this because I would love to be the child of some all powerful god or goddess, and also have some fighting skills as well.

The Schulyer Sisters – Share a Female Character That You Think is Underrated

I definitely have to go with Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. Hermione is such an intelligent person, yet she doesn’t get enough credit for it. Especially by Snape, who literally calls her a snobby know-it-all, just because she knows the answers to his questions. I think that Ron and Harry also took her a little for granted and some points, and while there were moments Hermione did show some girl power, I wish there were more scenes like that!

My Shot – Pick a Character That Goes After What They Want

Emma Carstairs from Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare! I think Emma is a very strong and independent character, which I really appreciate. Emma definitely goes after what she wants no matter the consequences, and takes nothing from nobody because she knows she could easily destroy them with a flick of her sword, Cortana.

Stay Alive – Pick a Character You Wish Was Still Alive

Hahahaha, if you have not finished watching season 8 of the Vampire Diaries (yes, I am using a TV show for this question, but it is also a book so…) then DO NOT READ BELOW!

For this I have to go with Stefan Salvatore because really? You really have to go and kill off a great guy who just tries to keep the ones he loves alive? Ugh, I cried a lot because of his death. It was just so sad to think that not only is he never really going to see Elena again after her being half dead for a few years, but he is also not going to see Caroline, Damon, Bonnie and really anyone again. The thought of this is absolutely heart breaking.

Burn – The Most Devastating End To A Relationship You Read About

Champion by Marie Lu…if you have read it you know what I am talking about.

You’ll Be Back – The Sassiest Villain You Have Read In A Book

Again! I have to use The Vampire Diaries because oh my gosh, Katherine and Kai were the most sassiest and best villains I have ever watched unfold on the screen. I mean yeah, they were awful people, but they were never dull or boring.

The Reynolds Pamphlet – A Book With a Twist That You Didn’t See Coming

I don’t like being spoiled on twists that happen in books so I am just not going to answer this one!

Non Stop – Pick A Series That You Marathoned

I have marathoned many, many series so I am just going to a list a few. Percy Jackson and the Olympians and the Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, Harry Potter by JK Rowling…The list goes on and on.

Satisfied – Pick Out Your Favourite Book With Multi POV

I can definitely tell you which book that I did not appreciate it having multiple POVs, and that was The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy. But for a book that I did enjoy that had mutli POV would probably be The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare because I always love Cassandra Clare’s main characters. They are just so fun and diverse and I always enjoying reading in their different perspectives.

Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story – Pick A Book That YOU Think Will Go Down In History

This time I am just going to go with the obvious choice, and that is Harry Potter by JK Rowling because it still has a massive impact on not only readers, but society today and it was written in the early 90’s! I think Harry Potter will not fade for a long, long, long time and I am glad because it truly is a fantastic series.

Trust – Pick a Book/Series Where Trust Was Betrayed

If you haven’t read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan than do not keep reading!!!

The book I chose for this question is Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, and the character is yes, you guessed it, Luke Castellan. I really liked Luke and then all of a sudden we realized he wasn’t who we thought he was, and it broke my heart. However, I remember thinking how genius it was to have a character so close to one of the main characters become the villain. It made for a more interesting and tense series that 10-14-year-old me loved. Honestly, I still love it even now.

Acceleration – Pick a Book/Series That You Accelerated Through

I have flown through many, many books, but the first one that came to my mind was Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. This is a pretty massive book, being over 660 pages, and I was so sucked into the world and the characters that I finished it in less than 48 hours. Every spare time I had before school, during school and after school was used to read this amazing book and I have absolutely no regrets.

Deflect/Block – Pick a Book/Series That You Have Blocked Out From Your Mind

A book I try not to think about at all is The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancy, the sequel to The 5th Wave. I really, really enjoyed The 5th Wave. I thought it was fun and action-packed, and so I was super excited to jump into the sequel…only to be utterly disappointed. I did not like this book at all and I try and block it out from my mind. There were multiple POVs in this book that I did enjoy reading from, and overall, the story felt stagnant.

Recall – Pick the First Book/Series You Read

The first book series I remember the most vividly that I read, would be Junie B Jones by Barbara Park. I borrowed them all from my older cousin and sometimes refused to give them back until I re-read them a couple of times. While I am not sure if I read all of them, I am certain I read a good chunk of the series and absolutely adored them. They lead me to read more little chapter books like Geronimo Stilton and The Magic Treehouse that eventually lead me to read the books I do today.

Friendship – Pick a Book/Series That Has an Awesome Friendship

I have to go cliche with this one, and say the Golden Trio from Harry Potter by JK Rowling! They are different in many ways, making them unbeatable when they are together. When you think of an ideal friendship, you cannot help but think of Harry, Hermione and Ron.

Surefooted – Pick a Confident Character from a Book/Series

Who else can I say but Jace from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare? Jace is such a cocky, arrogant character, but you can’t help but be head over heels for him because he does mean well. He knows people look at him in awe and drool as he walks by, and honestly, who can blame them?

Insight/Foresight – Pick a Book/Series with a Predictable Ending

It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing that this ending was predictable, but still, it was pretty obvious. The ending I am talking about is the one for The Selection by Kiera Cass because we all knew what was going to happen. I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t picked up these books, but the cover of the third book also gave it away so…

Waterproof – Pick a Book/Series That Everyone Else but You Cried While Reading

The Fault and Our Stars by John Green hands down! I liked the story to an extent, but I felt no emotional attachment to the characters so I didn’t cry…at all. As a matter of fact, during the movie, I forced myself to cry just so people wouldn’t think I was a monster with a black hole where my heart should be! Now, I realize not that many people cried during it either.

Power – Pick a Book/Series That Has a Powerful Message

There is a lot of hype over the TV series at the moment so I thought this would be a suitable choice, and that is Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I thought that this story holds a very important message that more people should be aware of. People need to watch out for signs from loved ones, or even the people around them, of suicide and realize it is not a joke. While I do believe the idea of suicide in Thirteen Reasons Why is a bit romanticized, I am glad that it is becoming a jumping point for more conversations and awareness around suicide.

Never Will I Ever Book Tag!

Never Will I Ever Ship This: Pick a Book/Series OTP That You Will Never Ship

For this, I definitely have to go with Chaol and Celaena from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. I did not agree with that ship at all because one, I am a DorianxCalaena shipper and also I just didn’t think they went that well together! Chaol is too uptight for Calaena which is why I haven’t and never will ship this OTP.

Never Will I Ever Forget This Ending: Pick a Book/Series Ending You Will Never Forget (In a Good or Bad Way)

This was difficult because there are a lot of endings I will never forget, whether it is in a good way or a bad way. I will say that at the moment, the ending for Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare had me shook, and lets be honest, it still does. I won’t spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read it, but if you have, you know what I mean. Those last few lines though!

Never Will I Ever Get Over this Character’s Death: Pick a Character Death from a Book/Series That You Will Never Stop Mourning (Give Spoiler Warning)

Okay, I am kind of bending the rules a bit because I am choosing a two characters from The Vampire Diaries TV show, but it is also book so at the same time its all okay. So if you haven’t completed all the seasons of The Vampire Diaries, than don’t keep reading!!!

So I have two for this answer at that is Jeremy’s death in season six, I think, because it was so heartbreaking to watch Elena lose not only her parents, but her brother as well. I know he comes back and all, like everyone seems to, but still, it broke me! Another that actually stayed dead, is Stefan Salvatore in that final episode…I cried so hard and will never stop mourning him.

Never Will I Ever Stop Crying Over this Book: Pick a Book/Series That You Will Always Cry Over (In a Good or Bad Way)

The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan! I chose this because even though it wasn’t all I was expecting, I cried because the series that I had been reading for years and years had ended and my favourite characters would no longer be in the spotlight anymore. I knew I would see Percy and Annabeth and the others in other Rick Riordan books, but this was the end of their adventures and the thought just makes me cry an ocean of tears!

Never Will I Ever Read this Book/Series: Pick a Book/Series You Will Never Read

I was going to say The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith, but I decided to change it up a bit and so I went with The 100 by Kass Morgan. I absolutely love the TV show, especially this current season, but I do not see myself ever picking up the book series just because I have heard from many reliable sources, that it is nowhere near as fantastic as the TV series. I don’t like saying never though, so possibly one day I will give it a try, but at this point, I don’t see myself reading it any time soon.

Never Will I Ever Stop Raving About this Book/Series:  Pick a Book/Series You Will Never Stop Raving About

 

I have to go with two different series for this, just because I think they are both amazing. The first is, of course, The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare because not only does it hold a lot of sentimental value to me, but I also just love the characters, the story and the world. The second series is the Ruby Red trilogy by Kerstin Gier which is just such an interesting and fun trilogy on time travel that I recommend to as many people as possible!

Never Will I Ever Lend this Book/Series to a Friend: Pick a Book/Series You Will Never Let Anyone Borrow

My Harry Potter series by JK Rowling because not only is it the beautiful UK edition, but it is also all paperback meaning it bends easily. I want everyone to read Harry Potter but they can just go to the library and pick up the series instead of ruining my gorgeous book covers!

Fairy Tale Book Tag!

I decided to create a new tag that associates fairy tales with books, and while this has most likely been done already, I wanted to make my own! It was very fun to make so I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Beauty and the Beast – Pick a book where love triumphs everything.

There were a few choices for this one but overall I am going to have to say Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead because despite everything that happens (not going to spoil anything) to Rose and Dimitri, they still fight through it and we really do see that their love for each other is stronger than any obstacle thrown at them…if you have finished the series you definitely know what I mean!

Cinderella – Pick a book with a beautiful cover change.

Anna and the French Kiss had an absolutely terrible cover before the new one which I now really like. The old cover had the Eiffel Tower in the background, a close up of a park bench with 2 people sitting on it and their hands almost touching. Long story short it is definitely one of the worst covers I have seen but the cover change is very nice so it is all good!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves – Pick a book with a large cast of characters.

Definitely going to use this one to talk about The Mortal Instruments because the whole series has a great and diverse cast of characters. We have Clary, Jace, Simon, Isabelle, Alec and Magnus as the main people we follow and I honestly love all of them (not all the time though…) and I find it very fun following them on their adventures. They are hilarious and unique in their own ways and I could read in their POV’s forever and ever and ever.

Sleeping Beauty – Pick a book that put you to sleep.

Ha ha ha…Insurgent by Veronica Roth. I really loved the first book in this trilogy, Divergent, but the second one was such a let down! It was slow and nothing too exciting happened. I also felt as if the writing declined slightly and I also didn’t really enjoy where the story went and how some of the characters dealt with certain situations…

Red Riding Hood – Pick a book with a “big bad wolf” in it.

I am also going to use this to sneak in some Harry Potter because honestly, Voldemort is the villain I least want to meet. In the books and movies he just unnerved me so much and he is definitely the worst of all villains. Just the way he looks with his nostril slits and pale skin, and just how cruel and insensitive he is scares me more than a wolf that’s for sure.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Pick a book with a world that sucked you in.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan! I find the world in this series so intriguing because of all the mythology. We never actually leave the real world, but Rick Riordan throws in the right amount of mythology to make it a place you never want to leave. Overall, Greek Mythology, to me, is the extremely interesting and I always love to read about it.

Favourite Series by the Genres

I am a huge fan of so many series but I decided to pick my favourite from each genre so here are my all time favourites! BTW I do use some not as popular genres to fit in all of my favourites…I just had to add them all.

Fantasy: The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – I absolutely LOVE the Mortal Instruments series so much, therefore making Cassandra Clare my all time favourite fantasy author as well. I love her easy writing and how it just flows nicely together. She makes wicked characters and epic worlds and honestly, her books are just a gift to read.

High Fantasy (yes): A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas – Yes, this is going to be separate from the regular ‘fantasy’ genre because Sarah J Maas is such freaking fantastic writer that I had to add in here. A Court of Thorns of Roses is by far one of my favourite reads of this year because it was magical, epic and just perfection.

Sci-Fi: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – I don’t read much sci-fi but the Lunar Chronicles is definitely the way to go. This series incorporates fairy tales, awesome characters and just overall an amazing story line. These books are so much fun to read and Marissa Meyer just has such a captivating writing style!

Dystopian: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – Again, I don’t read a lot of dystopian but the Shatter Me trilogy kept me entertained from beginning to end and I really just love these books. They are fun, gripping and just really easy reads. Plus Warner…

Middle Grade: Harry Potter by JK Rowling – YES this is counting as middle grade because technically it is along with fantasy AND I wanted to add my other favourite middle grade series in here too. But yeah! I am obsessed with Harry Potter, obviously, because how could you not love this epic world that JK Rowling has created?

Mythology: Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan – This has mythology and mythology is a genre so bam. Percy Jackson was the first series I read and the series that got me into reading so not including it would be a crime. Plus Rick Riordan has a way of creating the most lovable and amazing characters so…

Contemporary: Anna, Lola and Isla by Stephanie Perkins – Okay, so the titles of these books were waaay to long to put altogether but technically speaking this is a contemporary trilogy…I mean the stories all tie in together right? Anyways, I love all these books so much. They have awesome characters I relate to, they have Etienne and Cricket and they also just have cute scenes that make me all warm and fuzzy!

Top 5 Favourite Series

I really like making “Top 5…” lists so here is my top 5 favourite series! Don’t forget to check out my last post and comment what your all time favourite series is.

  1. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – I don’t know if you’ve noticed…but I am obsessed with the Mortal Instruments series. It is such a fun and amazing series with fantastic characters and an overall intriguing story line. I first read this series around 3 years ago and it has been my favourite series since then.
  2. Harry Potter by JK Rowling – It’s not a favourites list without Harry Potter on it! Harry Potter is such an AMAZING series that I love to read over and over and over. If you have NOT read this series for some reason please do because it will definitely change your life and view on reading.
  3. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead – I absolutely LOVE Vampire Academy. This series is just so interesting and easy going and I loved every second of it when I was reading the series. Every end of a book kept me on my toes and wanting more desperately. I just love when books do that because it makes me want to continue with that series!
  4. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan – This book series will always be on my favourites list for two reasons. 1) It was the series that opened the doors to reading for me and 2) it is just so darn fantastic. But seriously, Percy Jackson is one of my FAVOURITE main characters ever. He is sassy, sarcastic and amazing in all ways.
  5. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas – I have only read the first book so far in this series (out of 2) and it literally blew me away. It was a phenomenal book that made me want to keep reading and not stop. Sarah J Maas has such a beautiful writing style and unique storylines that I always enjoy. I cannot wait to pick up the second book in this amazing series!

Reading Routine

We all have our night and morning routines but some of us also have our reading routines so I decided to share that with you guys today! It’s not anything weird or different but this is just how I like to prepare myself before I let myself be whisked away to the world of whatever book I am reading.

It’s usually around eight thirty at night when I start thinking about going to sleep, and even then that’s a few hours away. I will do the usual stuff like get in my pyjama’s and brush my teeth but then I will make some tea (usually green tea even though I don’t even like it that much…) and then either pick out a book to start or continue with the one I am currently reading. If I am picking out a new one I usually inspect my shelf for a few minutes before I even figure out what genre I am in the mood to read. Right now specifically, I am into fantasy like Sarah J Maas’s books or Harry Potter but other times I am in the mood for light contemporaries or really anything else. Once I’ve picked out my book and finished getting ready for bed it is usually nine thirty so I will hop into bed and start reading! If it is a book I like I will read anywhere from 50-150 pages and stay up until past eleven but if it is a slower book I will read anywhere from 20-60 pages…Again, if it is a book I am really enjoying I will only stop once I can’t keep my eyes open which tends to be around midnight and then I finally put it down and go to bed. I also seem to have dreams corresponding with the book I read last which is always fun right?
