August Reading + Writing Goals

Happy Friday!

It is that time of the month where I share all my reading and writing goals for August, and go over what I got done in July. To be honest, it was not a lot! Life got in the way as it always seems to do when I attempt to be productive, but c’est la vie.

August is going to be a crazy month no matter what. I have some traveling I am doing (which is completely following the rules of my province), I start my brand-new full-time job as a Communications Development Lead, and I am launching a secret business! There is a limit to what I can do alongside all of this, so this will be a very practical goals list.

TIP: Write down everything that you MUST get done that month and then plan your goals. This way, you know what your main focus(es) are but also how much time you have to dedicate to other projects.

Here is what I wrote and read during July.

Writing

The Obsidian Butterfly – This is my Camp NaNoWriMo project and my goal for the month was to reach 25k. However, I ended up only writing 6,704 words. I am not too bummed about it because I was dealing with a lot of things for the last half of July. Overall, this is a good start and I’ve decided to take a break from the novel version of this story anyways (more on this later).

Flanelle Magazine -Fashion, Design, Culture & Photography

Flanelle Magazine Interview – In July, I got a really exciting project for the magazine I write for (Flanelle Magazine) and it was an interview with Zonnique, a 24-year-old, Atlanta born singer. This was a cool project because I’ve never done an interview before. I will link it once it is live on the website!

Reading

Daisy Jones & The Six: A Novel: Reid, Taylor Jenkins ...

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Even in a reading slump, this book never fails me. While this was the third time I’ve read this book, I zipped through it in only 2 days. I adore this book, the characters, the story…everything about it is just so addicting. It follows the rise and fall of this band from the 70s, and it was inspired by Fleetwood Mac so what is not to love? 5/5 stars

Kingdom of Souls (Kingdom of Souls, #1) by Rena Barron

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron – This took me a bit to get through, but overall, I really enjoyed the mythology, the characters, and the overall story. It didn’t blow my mind and I didn’t love any of the characters specifically, but it reminded me of my own book and it helped inspire me to work on it throughout July. Kingdom of Souls is inspired by West African mythology and follows a girl who year after year, has not been able to find her own magic. When the story takes a dark twist, she finds magic but it is not in the way she wanted or expected. 3.5/5 stars

Here is what I want to write and read in August…

Writing

The Obsidian Butterfly (Novella Version) – In March, I wrote a novella version of my novel idea, The Obsidian Butterfly, and submitted it to the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest which I received a Silver Honourable Mention for. I’ve decided to re-write this story because I feel it was missing some things that really held it back. My goal is to get 7,000 words done in August because the word limit is 17,000 (which being the overwriter I am, I will reach). Since the deadline is October 1st, it should give me enough time to finish it even with all the other things I’ve got going on.

Reading

Eliza and Her Monster by Fransesca Zappia – Yes, this is a re-read but apparently I am in the mood for re-reading my favourite contemporaries. Eliza and Her Monsters is an all-time favourite of mine, especially because the main character suffers from anxiety and how she feels and eventually copes with it is something I strongly relate to still. With everything going on, my anxiety has definitely spiked. I’ve been the most anxious these past few months that I have ever been in my entire life, but I’ve found re-reading my favourite books has helped.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – I have an unofficial tradition of reading this book every summer, or in the fall, before school starts. I am going into my second year of university and Cath, the main character, is in her first and we follow her as she experiences it. This book is also another one that is so easy for me to read. I have no doubt I will fly through it in less than a week!

Those are all the things I want to write and read during August, and also what I got done back in July. I swear, the months are flying by and I can BARELY keep up. But, I am doing my best and despite everything, this has been a productive quarantined summer.

Don’t forget to check out my last blog post as well as my social media accounts which are all linked down below! I will be announcing my secret business on there first, so follow my Twitter, Instagram, AND Pinterest.

Thanks for reading 🙂

Reading/Writing Update!

Sorry this is going up a bit later than usual, it was just hard to find some time to quickly type this up!

I was intending to read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling (as I am already halfway through it), but I had a sudden change in heart and picked up Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia instead. This was a re read and I think it was either on my December or January TBR, but it was also just a book I personally needed to read again. The main character, Eliza, deals with anxiety in this book, specifically social anxiety, and that is something that has been rapidly re-entering my life again. It was something I just needed to read and it definitely made me feel a lot better seeing that represented in YA. Since that book only took me about two days to read, I have started two other books that I am really excited about. The first is #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso which I am halfway through and already love it. It is about Sophia’s journey to kick starting her vintage clothing company, Nasty Gal, and how us #GIRLBOSSES can do it too. The other book I am currently reading is When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandyha Menon and I absolutely adore it! Despite only being 50 or so pages in, I already know that once I let myself just sit down and read it, I won’t want to stop. Hopefully I will be able to finish #GIRLBOSS by the end of today, thus it being my last book  of the year, but I really doubt I will be able to finish When Dimple Met Rishi…which is okay because it will be my first read of the new year then! I don’t think I have announced what my 2018 reading is, but it is 75 books and fingers crossed that I can get remotely near that number this coming year. 2017 was not a great reading year at all but if I start 2018 off right, I know it will be successful!

As for writing, I have been planning a story idea I have been working on for about a year. The overall, core idea is roughly the same, but I have been changing plot points, characters, etc over the past year, just trying to get the story right. I think I have gotten it almost right now, and hopefully I can start righting it when February comes around! I don’t want to rush it though, because I have always rushed myself to finish an outline and that has never turned out well.

That is all for my reading/writing update and I hope you guys enjoyed! I hope you have a wonderful rest of 2017, or if it is already 2018 for you then happy new year 🙂

January 2018 TBR!

This is my first TBR of the new year and I am so excited! 2017 was kind of a reading bust because I only read 40-or-so books, but I am determined to read a lot more this coming year. Because of that…my TBR is kind of ambitious but I know I can do it!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets + Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling

Currently I am re reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and am obviously loving it, as it is getting me in the holiday spirit. Obviously I cannot just start one and not continue on with the whole series, so I plan on giving the entire series a re read! I doubt I need to explain the synopsis of the Harry Potter series, especially since these are the second and third books in the series but yeah, I am really excited to be giving these my annual yearly re read!

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Eliza and Her Monsters was a book I read back in July for the BookTubeAThon, and I read it in just a few hours because it was so amazing. It talks about the hardships of being a creative person, as well as being someone who doesn’t fit in well at school and suffers from mental illness. These are really important representations in books because I know for myself, it is very relatable. Eliza and Her Monsters follows Eliza, who is the anonymous creator of the online phenomenon webcomic, Monstrous Sea. It follows Eliza as she meets Wallace, who happens to be Monstrous Sea’s biggest fanfic writer, and she struggles with keeping her true identity a secret as they grow closer together, brought together by their love for this webcomic that she created.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

wewereliars

This is a really short book that I heard is amazing, so I have no doubt that once I actually force myself to pick it up, I won’t want to put it down. We Were Liars follows a “perfect” family that spends every summer on private island, however this summer is not the same. Cadence, a fifteen year old girl, has something happen to her during her fifteenth summer, and with the help of others she tries to remember the accident. I really had to pull this synopsis from online, but even then it is still really mysterious…and intriguing so I am excited to (hopefully) pick it up next month!

This Savage Song by V.E Schwab

Image result for this savage song

I really look up to Victoria as a writer. She has fantastic tips and ideas about creativity, and overall she seems like a very genuine person! Not too long ago I purchased This Savage Song, because it got, and still is getting, wonderful reviews so I really would like to get to it in the New Year. This Savage Song follows August and Kate, two who are on opposite sides of their divided city which are at war. All August wants is to be human, and he could if he steals a soul with music. When Kate gets kicked out of yet another boarding school, a chance arises and he jumps at it, only to be faced with a change of direction and suddenly him and Kate are on the run.

Those are the five books I hope to get to in the month of January, and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog pots: January 2018 Talk 🙂

Back to School Reads!

Personally, I enjoy school. I like the structure and organization of it, as well as most of the classes. Especially getting into my last 2 years of high school, school has gotten more enjoyable because I can choose the majority of my classes. But anyways, enough about that. In this blog post, I will be discussing books that take place at schools and just give you that “back to school” vibe that we all love.

Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout

obsidian-cover5

I describe this book as a sci-fi contemporary book that follows seventeen year old Katy who has just moved to a small town in Virginia with her mother looking for a fresh start. There, she moves next to two twins named Dee and Daemon Black, and soon she is quickly thrust into their crazy world. Obviously, Katy goes to school through this book, and a new school might I add. Overall though, this is a really fun and quick read that is perfect if you find the back to school time stressful.

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Eliza and Her Monsters

Eliza and Her Monsters is a book that I think a lot of us can relate to. It follows odd Eliza Mirk, a girl who is the anonymous creator of a popular web comic, Monstrous Sea. And while her online life is thriving, her offline life…not so much. That is, until Wallace transfers to her school and she realizes maybe it is worth putting effort into her offline life. This is a really cute contemporary that made my heart and cheeks ache from smiling too much! I flew through this book in a day, so another easy read for back to school.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling

harry-potter-philosophers-stone-book

Of course this is going to be on this list! Harry Potter, if for some odd reason you didn’t know, entirely takes place at a magical boarding school called Hogwarts and gives you all the back to school vibes you could hope for. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone follows eleven year old, Harry Potter, who discovers that he is a wizard. He is then, sent off to this magical boarding school where he learns to control his powers while fighting off an evil wizard that everyone thought was dead. Everyone loves this series because how could you not?

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

just-listen

Just Listen and Saint Anything are my top 2 favourite Sarah Dessen books, but since I talk about Saint Anything a lot, I will put Just Listen down instead. Just Listen follows Annabel, a girl who seems to have it all but if you knew her, you would know she has anything but. Returning to school friendless and lonely, she meets another lone wolf named Olly and the two form a very unlikely bond. Another book I just flew through because it was so addicting! Perfect back to school read, and it shows you that if you feel like you don’t fit in, don’t give up looking because eventually, you will find where you belong.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

vampire-academy

I don’t want to only include contemporary so here is some supernatural fantasy! Vampire Academy takes place at a, well you guessed it, vampire academy that our two main characters, Rose and Lisa, ran away from a year ago. Brought back, they realize they are still having to face danger despite being “safe” at the academy.  This is part of a six (?) book series that you can’t help but binge read because they are so addicting!

Those are a few book recommendations for back to school and I hope you enjoyed. Don’t forget to check out my last blog post: July 2017 Wrap Up!

July 2017 Book Haul!

I went to my local library the other day and found two books that looked interesting for the price of $0.00. Awesome right? So yes, I have a bit of a book haul to share because I also got an exciting new release that I cannot wait to get into!

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Image result for eliza and her monsters

I was so, so, so excited to read it because Eliza and Her Monsters looked really funny and relatable, which it was. Eliza and Her Monsters follows a girl named Eliza Mirk who is the creator of  the really popular online comic series, Monstrous Sea. And while her online life is thriving, her offline life…not so much. That is until Wallace comes along, who is a popular fanfic writer who writes fanfic based off of Monstrous Sea. I have started the first few pages and cannot wait to continue on with this book!

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

I am not a huge John Green fan, but I have read most of his books and didn’t mind them. When I saw this book on the library cart for free, I thought, why not? From what I have gathered, this book is about a boy who is into girls who have the name Katherine, but one day he meets a girl who is NOT named Katherine, and he wonders if she can break his trend. It sounds like a fun, easy going book and I am curious to see how much I will enjoy it.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

This book is one I have seen around BookTube and have heard good things about, so since it was free I decided to pick it up. I read the synopsis but honestly, it was really complicated and long so I am just going to go into it with no expectations whatsoever! I do believe this is middle grade though and I have not read any middle grade for a very long time so this book is much needed.

Those are all of the books I bought in the month of July and I hope you enjoyed. Don’t forget to check out my last blog post: Reading/Writing Update!

Reading/Writing Update!

Next week is BookTubeAThon, yet I have more books I want to finish reading this week than next week. At the moment, I currently reading “City of Glass” by Cassandra Clare, the third book in The Mortal Instruments series, and I forgot how amazing it is! It has been about two years since I re read this series, but I remember City of Glass being my favourite of the six, and I can see why. I am close to finishing it, I have just over one hundred pages left, and when I finish that I will be reading “Alex and Eliza” by Melissa De La Cruz. I am really excited for this book because it is a YA story about the love between Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler. I cannot wait to dive into it and see how much I like it! I even have a third book I want to finish by…well, tomorrow, and that is “Eliza and Her Monsters” by Francesca Zappia. I picked this book up yesterday because the synopsis was something I was definitely in the mood for, and now I am just dying to read it! I am hoping to start and finish it tomorrow so wish me luck.

Yesterday I took a break from writing which I really didn’t want to do but had to because I needed to organize some of my thoughts for it. I am at a total of 43,073 words and my goal is to get to 50,000 words by the end of July, which I think I can easily get to. I have a clear vision on where my story is going, it is just the end that was somewhat fuzzy and also whether or not I wanted to write another book to go along with it, or another two, or none at all. Now though, I know how my end will play out and a rough outline for what a sequel could look like, things are a little more organized. I do plan on writing today and tomorrow and the rest of next week and so on (thankfully), and I am looking forward to keep chugging along!

That is all for my reading and writing update and I hope you enjoyed. Don’t forget to check out my last blog post: 2017 BookTubeAThon TBR!ED
