Reading + Writing Update!

Happy Sunday!

I usually write these earlier in the day but here I am now, sitting down on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and Shrek on in the background (Shrek is one of my favourite movies, okay?), ready to update you all on what I got read and written this past week. So yeah, life is pretty good right now and let’s just get into this update!

So far, I am 350 pages into the glorious Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare which came out this past Tuesday and I am absolutely loving it. Every morning when I wake up, I make some coffee and sit down with this book for a good hour before I start getting ready for the day. Since it’s like 912 pages, I am nearing that halfway mark but I am taking my time with it because I never want it to end. I will probably be doing a review for it sometime this month so stay tuned for that but yeah, it’s amazing! I have also been keeping up with listening to my audiobook which is City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare, the fifth book in her first series, The Mortal Instruments. This is a book I’ve read a million times, but the narrator for this book is actually an actress from one of my favourite TV shows (Castle), and she is so good at narrating all the characters and bringing the story to life in a new way. I’m only about 4 hours in meaning I still got a good 12 hours to go, but hopefully, I’ll be able to finish it by the end of this coming week. Lastly, I requested the novel adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen and it finally came in for me from the library! I picked it up earlier this week and absolutely flew through it. It was exactly how I imagined and it was a lot of fun to see the musical translated into a YA novel. If you like the soundtrack or the musical or if you just like contemporaries I definitely recommend checking it out!

This week has also been productive writing-wise and I’m hoping the rest of December is like that as well because I really, really need a good, productive month when it comes to both reading and writing (I need to read 10 more books to reach my Goodreads goal…). Tomorrow I have a creative non-fiction assignment due for my writing class, and I’m not going to lie, it has been a struggle to write. I don’t read much CNF (but I really want to so if you have recommendations, let me know!) so it has been difficult to find what I want to write about and then how to do that. I do have a story finished, I just need to edit it profusely, and I am not sure how I feel about it but it’s going to have to do! I already wrote like 4 drafts of it and I don’t have time (or energy) for anymore. Apart from that, I started a new short story that is kind of a playoff on my idea for Project Mystic (a novel idea I’ve been working on since March of this year) and I am having a lot of fun with it but haven’t spent to much time because of my CNF assignment. I’ll probably work on that a lot next week as well as all the scholarship essays I need to write that have looming deadlines. Since I’ve been running myself down with writing and homework lately, I am thinking of taking January off writing to replenish my creativity and all that jazz but I will keep you all updated on that.

Other than that, that is all I have to update you all on and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post as well as my social media accounts which will be linked down below. By the way, I started posting again on Instagram so that account is no longer dead! Anyways, thanks for reading 🙂

Reading + Writing Update!

Happy Sunday!

I’m not going to apologize for once again, for NOT having a blog post go up on Friday because it’s gotten to the point where I’m just like whatever. My Friday blog post was supposed to be all about my theories for Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare, but since I am re-reading Lord of Shadows right now, all my theories have upgraded or changed completely. So yeah, I finished Lord of Shadows today so now I have all of my thoughts and theories are ready to go for tomorrow’s blog post and I am so excited! Anyways, here is what I read and wrote this past week.

Earlier this week I finally finished listening to the audiobook for Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier which took me the entire month to get through, but I did it. I’ve read this book a million and one times, but I do really love the audiobooks for this entire trilogy, so I always have a lot of fun re-visiting them. I read them quite a few times this year though so I think I’m going to take a little break so I don’t wear them out. My next audiobook I am going to pick up is City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare since I am still working my way through The Mortal Instruments series via audiobook. I also finished reading Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare today, as I mentioned already…and I don’t know what else to say except it is amazing, I love it, and re-reading it has only magnified my already dangerously crazy love for it. I am SO excited for Queen of Air and Darkness and am really happy I decided to re-read both Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows before because I picked up on so many things I didn’t before. Since I am done re-reading LoS which is like 700 pages, I’m going to be focusing on finishing Perks of Being a Wallflower next, and since it’s so short, hopefully, I’ll finish it in the next day or so. I have a December TBR coming out later this coming week so stay tuned for that to see what other books I want to pick up this month!

As for writing, a lot of writing got done this week and I am pretty proud. In terms of homework and school related things, this week was really slow so I was able to put a lot more effort into my own personal writing. I think overall, I wrote about 6,000 words which I haven’t done in a while. I’ve been re-writing old short stories and editing them like crazy to get ready for portfolio scholarship I am submitting to this Tuesday and if I had school work to do I don’t think I’d be able to get as much done as I did. I still have a lot to get done though so fingers crossed it all gets done.

That is all for this reading and writing update, and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post as well as my social media accounts which are all linked down below. Thanks 🙂

Reading + Writing Update!

Happy Sunday!

Once again, sorry for no blog post on Friday! I promise this coming week there will be though because I’ve written and scheduled it already. Haha, look at me kind of being ahead of everything for once! Sitting down at the end of the week to write this blog post has been kind of difficult for me because it’s been hard to remember what I’ve gotten done writing-wise. With reading, I have been good at updating my Goodreads page every few days, but I have been lacking with my sticker tracker in my planner! This week I’m going to try and get back on top of that but these weeks have just been so jammed pack that it keeps slipping my mind. Anyways, onto what I read and wrote this week!

I wrapped up reading Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare on Tuesday which was bittersweet because I was so excited to get to Lord of Shadows for my first re-read, but I do think Lady Midnight is my favourite in the trilogy…however, I am 250 pages in Lord of Shadows and LOVING it, so I’m not THAT sad about finishing Lady Midnight, to be honest. Re-reading these books is getting me so pumped for Queen of Air and Darkness’s release which is only in 9 freaking days, and ugh, I’m so excited. Apart from Lord of Shadows I have not made much progress in any other books…I’m still on page 50 in Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, but since it’s so short I’ll probably try to bring it with me to school this week and hopefully squeeze in some reading time. I was also listening to the audiobook for Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier but I forgot to renew it so I had to wait a few days before getting it back, but I have it now and only have about 3 1/2 hours left to listen to so hopefully I will also get that finished this week as well. Apart from that though, I am just enjoying Lord of Shadows and getting ready for Queen of Air and Darkness! (Let me know if you’re as obsessed with The Dark Artifices trilogy as me…it’s definitely Cassandra Clare’s best series, right?)

Writing definitely happened this week…I’m just trying to remember exactly what. I know I did a re-write of my short story for my high school’s writing contest, as well as a LOT of editing because it was due Thursday. I also had to write an entire 8-page essay for English in one night because yep, I put it off to the last minute as one does. We only had to have it ready for a peer edit session but I did get it done luckily. It was complete trash but I still have a few more days to edit it before handing it in for marks. I’ve also been working on two short articles because I am applying to be the student writer for my local newspaper which is super exciting and nerve-wracking! Working at a newspaper or somewhere like Buzzfeed has been something I’ve always considered, along with writing books and short stories of course, because I do love writing articles and essays. I’m also to extroverted (and introverted…I am definitely an ambivert) not to work with other people so apart from writing my own books, I need to have some sort of day job to keep me a part of society. It also would be AMAZING to get paid for writing an article every month so fingers crossed I get the job! Since we only 5 days left of November (where did this month even go?!? I’m not complaining though ’cause I think we can all agree November is not an easy month), I want to squeeze a lot of writing into this week. I need to edit the four short stories/essays/articles in my portfolio and finish writing a few more for a portfolio scholarship I am submitting to which has a deadline of December 4th…so yeah that is coming up and I am NOT ready. Lots of writing needs to get done so I’m going to end this blog post and hop to it.

Anyways, that is all for this reading and writing update and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts below. Thanks 🙂

P.S. I know my Instagram pic below has been acting up but to be honest, I’m too lazy to fix it. Hopefully, it will fix itself!

Reading + Writing Update!

Happy Sunday!

Sorry for not having a blog post up on Friday. I wasn’t inspired to write anything and thought a short break would be nice as well since November is a pretty stressful month for me. However, I love writing these reading and writing updates so I am back for that as well as for three new blog posts coming this week that I just finished pre-writing! Anyways, I hope you had a great weekend and here is everything reading and writing related I got done this week 🙂

This week was a fantastic reading week, and I am so happy with what I got read. Currently, I am focusing on re-reading Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare in preparation for the third and final book in The Dark Artifices trilogy being released on December 4th. This is my favourite series of all time because I love everything about it: the characters, the plot, the writing, the world…everything is just amazing!!! I’m currently on page 500ish right now, meaning I’ve read like 400 pages this week which is crazy. This is my third (I think) re-read of this MASSIVE 720 paged book and of course, I am loving it just as much if not more than the first and second time. I cannot wait to finish it hopefully in the next two days or so, because I really want to get to the next book, Lord of Shadows since I have only ever read it once…and that was a year ago too! Hopefully, I can start that by Wednesday and get it all read before December 4th comes around but like the first book, it’s a big one. Apart from Lady Midnight, I’m also still listening to the audiobook for Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier. I got in the habit of listening to music while walking instead of my audiobook, but I did listen to quite a few hours still this week and only have about 3ish hours left. I’m trying to figure out what audiobook to listen to next, and while I was listening to The Mortal Instruments series before starting the Ruby Red trilogy, I think I’m going to pick up a fun, easy contemporary audiobook instead. But yes, it’s been a good week for reading and hopefully, next week will be too!

As for writing, I’ve been writing a few hundred words every day towards a few short stories I’ve been working on and today was a big editing day because of all those words I wrote this week. Deadlines are looming and stories are unfinished so I need to step it up and get some polished and ready for contests, literary magazines, scholarships, etc. For my writing class, we recently submitted our first writing assignment which was a fiction piece and while I was decently proud of my story, I didn’t get the mark I wanted. My story was by no means amazing or some of my best work I will admit, and the comments my TA made were very helpful…but a few comments kind of caught me by surprise at how she misinterpreted some parts in the weirdest of ways, but I mean that’s writing for you. I don’t really take my writing marks to heart (which is something I LEARNED to do, but believe me, it did not come naturally) but it’s always nice to get a good mark, right? Marking writing is hard though because it’s creative…there is no right or wrong answer. If another TA marked my writing, I would have gotten a completely different mark for better or for worse so. Anywayssss, I am hoping next week will be a bit more focused on writing since November and December are busy writing months (and I’m glad one of those months is coming to an end finally), and stuff needs to get done!

That is all for my reading and writing update, and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts which are linked down below. Thanks, and have a great day 🙂

Reading + Writing Update

Happy Sunday!

Did lots of reading and writing happen this week? Kind of. This week was a weird week of being in a creative/productive slump but I think I am getting out of it. Hopefully. Since it is Remembrance Day today though, I get the day off school tomorrow which means more time to get some reading, writing, and homework done. Again, hopefully.

I didn’t finish any books this week, but I made a lot of progress in the ones I’m currently reading. This week has been a week of music rather than audiobooks sadly, but I’ve still listened to about an hour more of the audiobook for Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier. I still have about 9 hours left, but I have doubt I’ll be able to finish it sometime this week or at least get a good chunk more listened to. Since I finished Emergency Contact last week, I started my re-read of Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare and am about 100 pages in. I’m hoping to get another 100 pages read at least by the end of next week, but if I want to get it finished as well as Lord of Shadows by the time Queen of Air and Darkness is released…I have to read a little faster. As for my writing class, I’ve been reading this book of poems called Bent Box by Lee Maracle and while I’m not a huge fan of poetry, I am really enjoying the poems in this book. They are so honest and raw that I can’t help but connect and relate to them in a way that has me nodding my head. I can only read so many at a time though, but again, I’m hoping I’ll finish it by next week. I’ve also been re-reading Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky because it is a short, sweet book that is easy for me to carry around and read when I have the time. It’s a book I’ve read a few times already, but I always enjoy my re-read of it as I am now! However, I’m only like 50 pages into it but I’ll probably finish it sometime next week. I put all of this on myself, reading too many books at once, but oh well.

So…I’ve failed NaNoWriMo already. I know, I know. We are only 11 days into November, but I’ve decided to abandon my 50k word goal for this month because yeah, that is not going to happen. However, I still plan on writing a lot this month but focusing on multiple projects instead of just one. In tomorrow’s blog post, I’ll be going into a little more detail as well as giving some tips on how to get the most of NaNoWriMo even if you decide to tweak the original idea a bit. I have a lot of essays for school as well as short stories for portfolio scholarships due soon, and sadly those need to be my prime focus at the moment. I’ve written about 3 first drafts of short stories this week though, which is awesome, and I’ve also started outlining some of my essays for school so all in all, it has still been a productive week writing wise. I’m a little sad I won’t have time to work on Project Mystic, but it has been years since NaNoWriMo has actually worked for me so I can’t say I’m surprised.

That is all for this reading and writing update and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts linked down below. Thanks 🙂

Reading + Writing Update

Happy Sunday!

Before I get into this update, I wanted to quickly rave about Bohemian Rhapsody (the movie all about the band Queen) which came out two days ago! I am a HUGE Queen fan and I have been for a few years now. While I wasn’t alive when they were at their peak (I mean, they still are but you know what I mean), I still really appreciate and adore their music and listen to it all the time. The movie was spectacular and is something everyone needs to go watch!!! Comment below if you’ve watched it because I need to discuss it!

Okay, anywayyyys. This week was a really great reading week and a great way to start the new month. On Monday, I finished reading Traplines by Eden Robinson and I knew I’d enjoy this short story collection, but I ended up really, really liking it. Her writing style is simple but also impactful, and all of her stories had so many layers to them that I really enjoyed uncovering. I talked about my thoughts on the stories in my October wrap up so check that out if you want to hear more! I also finished listening to the audiobook for Sapphire Blue on Wednesday, and am now working my through the third book in the trilogy via audiobook, Emerald Green. These are audiobooks I go through extremely quickly and am already like 3 hours into this audiobook. Another book I’ve made a lot of progress in this week was Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi! I’ve been reading this book for a while but flew through the last 200ish pages. The story really picked up and I ended up adoring this contemporary. It was relatable, real, and quirky. All the things I love!

As for writing, I’ve been doing stuff, I swear! This past week I’ve been working on rewrites and edits of a short story for my writing class (which is due tomorrow ajsnfsjnf), and it has been a process let me tell you. This is my first real grade for this class so I’ve been working really hard on this story and I am pretty happy with the end product! Maybe I will share it on my blog but who knows. I’ve also been working on Project Mystic, my current NaNo project buuuut I have only written for day 1…Currently, Project Mystic draft 2.5 is sitting at a whopping 1,805 words. Yeah…this weekend I was hit really bad with some creative burnout. I had a really stressful week that required lots and lots of essay writing and scrambling to finish assignments late at night, so I just needed a good 3 days to sit back and relax. Hopefully, I will try to write some more tomorrow but since I have other writing things I need to work on, we will see! I do plan on hitting 50k though. How? I have no idea.

That is all for this writing and reading update and I hope you enjoyed! Let me know how your week was reading and writing wise because I’d love to know! Also, don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts linked below. Thanks 🙂

Reading + Writing Update

Happy Sunday!

This was a really good reading AND writing week which makes me so incredibly happy, and I only hope that November is as well! I finished three books this past week: the last few hours City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare (via audiobook), the last 100ish pages of The Light Between Worlds (make sure you check out my non-spoiler review of it HERE!), and the last 84 pages of Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden. I also made it through a few other books I’ve been reading for a while, and the end of all of them is so close! I am hoping to get them all read before October is over (so like, in 3 days…) and since I am enjoying them so much I think I can manage it. I am about halfway through Emergency Contact by Mary H.K Choi so I have about 180ish pages left and so far, I am liking it. It’s not mind-blowing or anything, but its a fun, nice book to curl up with at the end of the day. I’ve also made progress with Traplines by Eden Robinson which I am also just over halfway through. I have to return it to the library by Tuesday so I will definitely be putting this as my top priority this coming week, especially since I am using it for a writing class assignment. Okay, the last book I have to update you on is my current audiobook listen which is Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier, the second book in the Ruby Red trilogy (or Precious Stones trilogy, I don’t know what it’s called). I started listening to this on Thursday and am 3/8 hours through it. Since I have a long week of busing and walking, I will definitely be able to get it done by the end of Wednesday because I absolutely love these audiobooks and this story!

As for writing, I definitely did some writing this week but what exactly, is escaping my mind. I am pretty sure that I wrote two drafts of my short story assignment for my writing class, but then I changed the idea and wrote the new draft today. I also worked on editing some short stories and even entered a local writing contest which was a lot of fun! It has been a few months since I’ve entered a writing contest and even though it was for tiny, short stories that were about 100 words long, it was a nice feeling to get my work back out there.

Anyways, that is all for this update and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts which are all linked down below. Thanks 🙂

Reading + Writing Update

Happy Sunday!

Sorry for no Friday blog post, my idea fell through but that’s alright because as Queen says, the show must go on! (I’ve been listening to a lot of Queen lately since the movie comes out in 2 weeks! Ah!) Anyways, this was a rough week. I had tests and projects due which means yes, the nights before were spent scrambling to finish them rather than read. However, surprisingly reading and writing got done this week so let’s discuss that!

Last Sunday I started listening to the audiobook for Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier and I absolutely just flew through it, as expected. Despite all the other books I need to get finished, I will probably start listening to the second book, Sapphire Blue on Monday but I am going to try to focus on finishing the City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare audiobook since I have been listening to it for a while. I have also been making my way through Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden for my English class, and now only have about 84 pages left of it meaning I read just over 100 pages of it which is great. Once I got halfway through the book, I did start enjoying it a lot more as I finally found a rhythm with the characters and the story, but I am really looking forward to finally finishing it by the end of this coming week. The last book I’ve made progress in this week is The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth. I’m not moving as fast through this re-read as I would like because of other books I need to read at whatnot, but I did manage to read about another 75 pages of it this week. That means I still got quite a bit to go…like 150 pages, but fingers crossed I can get those pages read by Wednesday which is when I want my review to go up for it!

As for writing, I was productive enough. Especially when I like to spend October focusing on planning and prepping my NaNoWriMo projects for November. I did do some re-writing and editing of a short story I wrote a while ago, as well as writing the first draft for my writing class short story assignment. For this short story assignment, it was supposed to be a literary piece of fiction and let me tell you, literary fiction does not come easily to me. It is so hard to write something that seems interesting enough to me but doesn’t have magic… I’m glad I have to write something out of my comfort zone like this though because so far, it has definitely helped me become a stronger and more well-rounded writer.

That is all for this reading and writing update and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts which are all linked down below. Thanks 🙂

Reading + Writing Update!

Happy Sunday!

Since I didn’t update you all last week, I have a lot to update you all. Long story short, I am currently reading six books. Yeah, six. How did this happen you might ask? Well, I just kept picking up and starting books I wanted to read (some re-reads), and here I am. I am just going to roll with it though and focus on two or three at a time (still a lot, but some of these are books I have to read for school!) until I get through them all…hopefully by the end of October. Anyways, because I have so many books that I am currently reading, I am not going to write a paragraph because it would be MASSIVE. Instead, I will do a quick, to the point update.

Books Finished:

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia – Finished on October 6th – LOVED re-reading it 5/5 stars

Currently Reading:

Traplines by Eden Robinson – Progress: 70/215 pages (none since the last update)

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare (audiobook) – 6ish/12 hours (4 more hours since the last update) – Still enjoying my re-read of this series!

Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden – 191/384 pages (started it on Oct 5th) – Not exactly my cup of tea but I have to read it for school so I am getting through it…slowly

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi – 80/394 pages (started it on Oct 8th) – Enjoying it a lot so far, especially its atmosphere (college, coffee shops, and romance!)

The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth – 50/325 pages (started it on Oct 10th) – Re-reading this hauntingly beautiful story for my review of it since it is getting released to the world this month on Oct 23rd!

Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier (audiobook) – 1.5/8.5 hours (started this today!) – I really wanted to re-read this trilogy during the fall and thought it would be smarter to re-visit them via audiobook. Loving it of course!

Okay, that was a lot easier than writing out a monstrous paragraph. Anyways, as for writing, I haven’t done too, too much. I have done a few hours of NaNoWriMo prep since it is right around the corner though. I have re-outlined the first act (almost), some of the magic system, and characters as well. I still need to finish re-outlining the second and third as well as a few more characters, but other than that I think I will be set for November! This weekend I actually did do a little bit of writing. I am re-vamping a short story I wrote almost a year ago for my writing portfolio, and have written about 700 new words of it so far. Hopefully, I will finish my first draft of re-writes for it this week, but I am not rushing it.

That is all for my reading and writing update, and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post, as well as my social media accounts all linked below. Thanks 🙂

Reading + Writing Update

Helloooo readers, writers, people of the blogging-verse. Today, I am back with my weekly reading and writing update so let’s just get into it! Here is everything I managed to accomplish this week and I am pretty proud with it all.

While I didn’t finish any books this week, I did make some progress in the books I started. I am about 2 hours into listening to the audiobook for City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare, and so far I am enjoying that. There are about 10 more hours of audiobook left I think so I still got a bit more to get through, but I have no doubt that I will finish it sometime this coming week. I also started reading Traplines by Eden Robinson, a book of 4 short stories, for my writing class. I am on the second story and am really enjoying it so far! My goal is to read the last two stories by Wednesday and then write my little write up I have to hand in with it by the end of the week. I love reading short story books because instead of trying to read a certain amount of pages, I just read a short story a day. Lastly, I decided to pick up Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. I really wanted to get this done by the end of today, but honestly, that was not going to happen. I had too much homework to do and ended up only reading to page 150. Which is still pretty good though because that means I read around 80 pages of it this weekend! Anyways, I know I will finish it sometime this week so it’s all good.

As for writing, I have been working on rewriting and editing my first 20 pages of my WIP for just over a month now for a fellowship, and yesterday I finally submitted it! The deadline was today but I wanted to get it in a little earlier just in case, so I finished editing early yesterday and then sent it off! It felt so good because I have been working towards this deadline for months now and I finally have it done. Now I can focus on re-outlining my WIP during October so I can write draft 2.5 of it during NaNoWriMo, and also work on some short stories for my portfolio! It will also be nice to focus a little more on my homework and blog posts, and just take a step back from trying to write, write, and write. Even though I love, I still need a break sometimes.

That is all for my reading and writing update and I hope you enjoyed! Don’t forget to check out my last blog post as well as my social media accounts linked below. Thanks 🙂
